Clear out the freezer before filling it up again

Freezers have a habit of filling up gradually, with each new item pushed further to the back until nothing at the front is actually recognisable any more. Before adding a fresh batch of shopping, it is worth taking everything out and having an honest look at what has actually been sitting there for a while.

Sort what comes out into what is clearly still worth using and what has been there long enough that it should simply be used up soon or let go. This is easier to judge once everything is laid out on the counter rather than hidden behind other packets in a crowded drawer.

Use the clear-out to plan the coming week

Anything that still looks perfectly good can be worked straight into the next few days' meals, turning a tidying job into the start of proper meal planning. This way, nothing gets thrown out simply because it was forgotten, and the freezer starts filling up again with a clearer sense of what is inside it.

Wipe down the drawers or shelves while they are empty, since this is rarely done otherwise in a busy week. A clean freezer is also easier to keep organised afterwards, because it becomes obvious straight away when something has been pushed out of place.

Doing this clear-out every so often, rather than only when the freezer is completely full, keeps the whole system far more manageable. A shorter, more frequent check is usually easier than one large, overwhelming sort-out once everything has been forgotten for months.

With a properly cleared freezer, new shopping goes in with a clear sense of what else is already there. Nothing gets buried and forgotten again straight away, and the freezer stays a place you can actually rely on through the week.
